As a serial entrepreneur and investor who’s started and invested in 30+ ventures, I’m involved in hiring so much hiring – be it for my own companies or for ventures we’re invested in and this extends to our partners in big corporations who also co-invest with us.
The good news: we’re invested in great founders… world-class individuals even from Silicon Valley we’re getting them here… they’re building great products that impact hundreds of thousands of Filipino customers.
But the bad news is really bad. All of them (all of us!) eventually hit a brick wall in the Philippines: WE CANNOT FIND ENOUGH TALENT FOR OUR TEAMS, IT’S THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE TO FULFILLING OUR VISION OF IMPACT.
So all of Ni2 and especially this PH1000 initiative is meant to transform the Philippines’ talent scarcity into a force of thousands of top-notch Filipinos, and to signal to recruiters like us: THESE ARE THE PEOPLE YOU WANT TO HIRE!

This is not just textbook, it’s something we do araw-araw. What are the benefits? To be honest, I have already benefited. So when I say "these are the benefits", I don’t mean "hey guys these are the benefits if you follow this". No, I’m saying these are benefits I myself, our company, my teams have already realized. 3 things... 1) Compassion: starting, not with products (the mistake of a lot of us marketing and sales guys out there!), but with customers and their pains. 2) Agility: moving very fast, pivoting. Especially because of the pandemic we’ve had to pivot our channels, our biz models, everything we do, everyday. I’m now in charge of 7 different projects that are all pandemic babies, all things we never used to do - so had I not had the Ignite/Ni2 innovation mindset it would be difficult for me to adapt. 3) Purpose: our Ignite/Ni2 experience has helped us tie Compassion (I found a pain) and Agility (I’m able to solve pains in 100-day cycles) into a deep sense of Purpose. When you find your purpose you’re no longer working for a pay check. We found something bigger. So in sum, I’m actually one of the beneficiaries already and doing Ni2 will allow me to benefit even more and share it with the others. |

One of the things I ask when I recruit is: are you willing to be a pirate? Comes from a famous speech by Steve Jobs - it’s more fun to be a pirate (innovators) than to join the navy (typical corporate). You’re gonna have to break rules… you need to have the personal courage to challenge the status quo. |

It’s hard to get pirates! That has been the biggest challenge for us too. We’ve been looking to expand our group and create innovations but it’s been very difficult to find the people who can do it. Talent is important and that’s why we work with academe, but the last 20 years of education have not taught people how to think and behave like pirates. |

It's what we spend the most time on in board meetings and frankly what worries investors the most. At the end of the day, our ability to grow and fulfill our market ambitions and the ROI we're looking for - it will come down to whether we can recruit the right people and build the right teams. And we're failing in that - we just can't find enough of the right people up and down the ranks and all across our hiring needs. This is what Jojo calls the talent crisis. Going back to David’s pirates vs navy… innovation does not happen if you don’t have innovators. Companies are willing to hire these types at a high salary, but they cannot find the people who can measure up to this work and income. |
